Mzukulu
Mzukulu, whose real name is Sfanele Dumisani Zulu, is a South African Maskandi singer, songwriter and guitarist from KwaCeza, KwaZulu-Natal. He comes from a family with a deep musical heritage. Mzukulu is the grandson of legendary Maskandi musician Zimele “Geja” Buthelezi and the son of late Maskandi performers Phumangelakhe Buthelezi and Thuleleni “Ma-Hlela” Buthelezi. His family background has played an important role in shaping his connection to traditional Zulu music and storytelling.
Mzukulu began performing publicly in 2010, while still a teenager, appearing at shebeens and community centres. He is recognised for his distinctive, softer vocal style and acoustic-guitar-led Maskandi sound. His debut album, Vukani Nonke, arrived in 2017, featuring songs such as “Makabahle” and “Wemfama.” He followed it with projects including Mabili Amaxoki in 2019, which featured collaborations with established Maskandi artists such as Thokozani Langa and Inyosi Mdletshe.
Mzukulu has continued to strengthen his position in modern Maskandi through both solo releases and collaborations. His catalogue includes songs such as “Nomalanga,” “Wang’lahlelani,” “Sukuma Mkami Bakubone,” “Ijuba” featuring Shenge WaseHlalankosi, and “Akabuye” with Sjava and Inkos’yamagcokama. His 2025 album Ngifuna Intozami became a major streaming success, reportedly surpassing 700,000 Spotify streams within two days, further establishing him as one of the prominent contemporary voices carrying the Maskandi tradition into a new generation.
