About Album

South African artist Saliwa delivers Umfana Wezinkomo, a full-length project that captures his distinctive approach to South African music through storytelling, isiZulu expression, and culturally familiar themes. Released on July 29, 2023, the album contains 16 tracks with a total running time of approximately 1 hour and 24 minutes. It was released through Indoni Music Production and Events, giving listeners a substantial body of work through which to explore Saliwa’s artistry.

The album features a combination of solo performances and collaborations, creating variety across the project. Featured contributors include Indoni, Gqizile, Mdumazi, Singela Mkhize, and Umfulongashi, with songs such as “Dokotela,” “eMaresi,” “Amagoso Ayekeni,” “NjengoShaka Zulu,” and “Imahhala iKhondomu” adding different vocal perspectives. The project also includes “Umfana weziNkomo,” the song that shares its name with the album, alongside solo titles such as “Amacala oBaba,” “INsizwa noMansizwana,” and “Kuleziyantaba.”

One of the project’s strongest qualities is its connection to South African language and cultural storytelling. Umfana Wezinkomo uses isiZulu titles and themes that draw attention to everyday experiences, relationships, community life, identity, and familiar cultural references. The album’s tracklist also demonstrates Saliwa’s ability to move between solo material and collaborative performances without losing the recognisable character of the project. For listeners exploring Zulu music, Maskandi-influenced sounds, and contemporary South African releases, the album provides a substantial listening experience with plenty of material to discover.
